About the center
The Landau Center for Research in Mathematical Analysis and Related
Areas is a center supported by the
Minerva Foundation (Germany) and
devoted to promoting scientific cooperation between the Hebrew
University and German scientists in all fields of mathematics, with
particular emphasis on analysis.
The center was named after Edmund Landau
(1877-1938), who played an important role in the
foundation of the Einstein Institute of
Mathematics at the Hebrew University.
A display dedicated to Edmund Landau, is located in the reception hall
on the 2nd floor of the Manchester House, in the Edmond J. Safra campus,
Givat-Ram.
The Landau Center has been in operation since 1989. It is administered
by a board of six mathematicians, 3 Germans and 3 Israelis, who appoint
a director to run the center's activities.
The Edmund Landau Minerva Center for Research in
Mathematical Analysis and Related Areas has been closed
as of December 31st, 2010
- Fields of research
- The main research activities of the center lie in diverse areas of
mathematics where mathematical analysis plays a central role. This includes
the traditional
areas of mathematical analysis such as partial differential equations,
functional analysis and ergodic theory, but extends also to differential
geometry and number theory.
- Research activities
- The Landau Center's activities include the granting of
post-doctoral fellowships to Israeli and German
nationals, as well as fellowships for doctoral students.
The Center also supports exchange visits of shorter
duration by Israeli and German scientists.
Each year since its inception the center has held the
Landau Lectures, a series of three lectures by a
distinguished mathematician.
Past lecturers were J. Moser, E. Bombieri,
Y. Sinai, P.L. Lions, W. Thurston, S. Hildebrandt,
P. Sarnak, A. Connes, E. Lieb, D. Sullivan,
Y. Eliashberg, S. Mueller and J. Cheeger.
In addition to the above, the center sponsors schools,
workshops and symposia in areas that are of interest to its members.
These have included the areas of fluid dynamics, dynamical systems, topology
and analysis, stochastic dynamics, complex analysis and the occurrence of
regulators in analysis, geometry and number theory.
- Location
- The center is located in the Manchester House, Einstein Institute
of Mathematics in the Edmond J. Safra campus, Givat-Ram,
building #55 on the How to reach us map
of the campus.
