Abstract: Twenty years ago V. F. R. Jones defined an interesting new class of unitary braid group representations and asked for (the closure of) the images of these representations. Recently M. Freedman raised the problem again in connection with his program of topological quantum computation. This talk will describe joint work with M. Freedman and Z. Wang settling the problem. Time permitting, I will briefly discuss applications to knot theory and quantum computation.
