Professor Shmuel Weinberger (Chicago)
"Taming without killing"
Abstract:
If one has a topological embedding of a manifold (even the case of a
circle is interesting) into a smooth manifold, then it can often be
approximated by smooth ones. This kills all of its beautiful wildness.
We will try to gain some understanding of what the aggregate of genuinely
wild embeddings really is like (and also try to explain why one cares
about this question).
Refreshements will be served at 3:45 pm in room 12 of the mathematics
building.
The audience is invited to the "after colloquium coffee chat"
with the speaker in Beit-Belgia.
